Bigfork Schools has joined the Battle of the Belts – a Flathead County Health Department initiative for increased seatbelt use. Our high school students in the National Honor Society and Student Council are leading the charge and planning different activities to raise awareness about the importance of seatbelt use.
The students conducted an initial survey on seatbelt use, and the numbers show there is room for improvement: 45% of our students do not wear their seatbelts during their morning drive to school (based on a ticket counter).
A number of activities have already been initiated to get that number down, such as the Buckle Up Bigfork message displayed on the playground fence, and an informational video made by the students themselves to inspire and encourage their peers.
More activities will follow, and a follow-up survey will hopefully show a real change in the numbers of people wearing seatbelts.
