Frequently Asked Questions
What is a School-Based Health Center?
A School-Based Health Center brings a healthcare provider to the school, allowing students and staff to avoid health-related absenteeism and receive the support they need to succeed in the classroom. SBHCs are staffed by a Nurse Practitioner and a Medical Assistant or Registered Nurse to provide support to the students and staff.
What services are provided at the School-Based Health Center?
The services provided include Well-Child Checks, Annual exams, sports physicals, visits for acute or minor injuries and illnesses, management of chronic conditions, referrals to specialists, and prescribing and managing prescription medications. Other services available include routine blood draws and point-of-care testing for Influenza, Strep Throat, RSV, Mono, and COVID-19.
Does the student need parental permission to receive services?
Yes. The student health center will require the parent or legal guardian to sign a consent form before their child may receive services in the center. The School-Based Health Center takes the approach that the clinician, parents, and child will work together to resolve health problems.
Do the parent need to be present for the student to receive services?
Parents are highly encouraged to be present during their children’s appointments.
What is the cost for my child to receive services at the health center?
The School-Based Health Center will bill insurance in the same manner as any primary care clinic. However, no child will be refused services for those who have no insurance and do not qualify for Medicaid. Co-pays and deductibles are NOT collected at the time of service, but will be sent out via a bill at a later time.
Does the School-Based Health Center take money away from Bigfork School?
No. The School-Based Health Center is not operated by Bigfork School; it is funded through grants and Logan Health.
How does this help Bigfork School focus on education?
Schools cannot do their job of educating if students are not in school or cannot concentrate because of discomfort or other health problems. Research shows that students who use School-Based Health Centers are less likely to be absent or tardy and more likely to graduate.
Will the School-Based Health Center eliminate the need for school nurse or school counselors?
No. School-Based Health Centers do not replace school nurses or counselors. Instead, we complement services already being provided by placing additional resources in the schools. School nurses and counselors are vitally important to comprehensive health care for students.
Who else is seen in the School-Based Health Center?
The School-Based Health Center also sees teachers, staff, and faculty of the Bigfork School District. This allows the teachers to be seen quickly and return to school. Being able to be seen on campus without having to take the full day off, find a substitute teacher, and/or create substitute teacher plans, they can spend more time in the classroom/office, which benefits the students of Bigfork schools.
