Our “Garden of Eatin”

To bloom, one must grow. This is our intention with the Bigfork School Garden. Our “Garden of Eatin’” is a special place for all grades to be able to enjoy. The purpose is meeting all the senses; to visually see the beauty, taste, and savor the sweetness, hear nature, feel the dirt, and reconnect with nature as well as smell the flowers that bloom. The garden is a safe space for students to leave the worries of the world and be present.  

Our goal is to create a love of not only trying new foods but also teaching students to be self-sustainable and sufficient. We start with kindergarten by planting pumpkin seeds in the “pumpkin patch” during spring, to grow pumpkins for the next year’s incoming Kinders to enjoy. To then be replicated. The focus is that this is for the kids, by the kids. Creating lasting legacies for the next generations. This will continue throughout the different grade levels. Creating a pathway that will connect individual grades with a piece of the garden.

The Middle School Garden Club takes the lead in teaching and creating opportunities for younger students to be involved. They oversee creating fundraising opportunities, reaching out to potential sponsors, and learning how to maintain and run the school garden. The food and herbs harvested from the garden will be used in our culinary classes at both Middle School and High School level.

During the Summer we are always looking for help to keep our garden alive and thriving. Sign-ups to volunteer will start at the end of May.

They say it takes a village to raise a child. This is why we could not do it without the help of outside supporters. Please see our options for sponsoring an area of the garden. Each box will have a sign thanking the individual sponsors on each box. Designed by the students and placed proudly for the school year. Sponsoring a garden box is easy. Through your donation, seeds, dirt, mulch etc. are purchased, planted, and taken care of by students.  

Audrey Hepburn once said, “To plant a garden is to dream of tomorrow.”
